Peptic ulcer disease and medical nutrition:

The abnormal pace of modern life makes a large part of society forget the principles of proper nutrition and only remember it after
Problems with the stomach and other organs of the digestive system when manifested.

What can and what is forbidden in peptic ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum, what is included in the diet, let’s find out together

After surgery

In the postoperative period it is necessary to follow a special diet, however, in the first three days after surgery, meals are prohibited, on the 4th-5th day it is allowed to drink berry jelly or tea.

The diet is further expanded in the form of vegetable soups, purees, cereal milk porridge.

The goal of the diet is to remove all irritating factors from the gastrointestinal tract, it lasts from 7 to 10 days.

Period of aggravation

During the aggravation period it is also necessary to follow a strict diet, food should be cooked or steamed, grated or pureed, gradually increasing the amount of food.

The purpose of such nutrition is to replenish the body with the necessary substances and restore energy, it is a transitional type of nutrition, from a strict diet to a semi-strict form.

During remission

A diet is prescribed that is as close as possible to the usual type of food, albeit with small modifications. Its purpose is to maintain a solid and lasting remission.

At any stage, the diet is prescribed by the attending physician taking into account the patient’s condition – concomitant diseases, disease stage, age and body weight.

Dietary nutrition can not solve all the problems in peptic ulcer disease, but with properly selected medical treatment it can really bring great benefits in the process of complete recovery of the patient. For this, it is necessary to take into account several recommendations:

  • First of all, the patient should be fed in small portions, in portions, on average 6-7 times a day, with strict adherence to the feeding schedule, without long intervals, and it is forbidden to lie down at intervals. The interval between meals should not exceed 3.5 hours, and dinner should be planned not less than 2 hours before bedtime;
  • Foods should be selected correctly, we should stop choosing those that act on the secretory function of the stomach and neutralize hydrochloric acid in its juice, therefore, food irritants are strictly prohibited, all products that increase the acidity of gastric juice should be excluded from the patient’s diet. (Products rich in plant cells);
  • The thermal and mechanical properties of the food must be taken into account. Products should be well sorted and processed, food should be neither cold nor too hot. The temperature of the food should be close to 32-38 degrees, so it is much easier to absorb and digest. Foods smaller than 15 degrees and temperatures above 55 degrees are prohibited;
  • Exclude from the ration heavy, fatty and fried foods, as well as semi-finished products, canned products and fast food;
  • It is possible to add vegetable and creamy butter in moderation, fats, both vegetable and animal, accelerate the healing of ulcers in the stomach and intestines;
  • Food must be thermally processed: cooked, steamed or baked;
  • It is recommended to drink 1.5 liters of fluid per day in the form of drinking water;
  • The amount of table salt in the ration should be reduced and it should not exceed 6-8 grams, during the aggravation period it is desirable to completely exclude table salt from the ration;
  • The ration should be balanced, which includes such content of fats, proteins and carbohydrates: 100-120 grams of carbohydrates, 80-100 grams of fats and 400-450 grams of proteins. Calories should be taken according to the age norm.

Recommended components of the ration:

Milk product

Milk, cream, kefir, cottage cheese and sour cream are allowed. Milk is a very useful product for people with peptic ulcer disease, so if you do not like to drink it, try adding it to coffee or tea.

Bread

Here we have to pay attention, as not all breads are recommended for people with peptic ulcer disease, it must be well-dried, one day white bread, biscuits are also acceptable.

Vegetables

Vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, zucchini, non-sour tomatoes are allowed.

Fruits and berries

Fruits and berries that do not have a thick and cool skin are allowed, for example: strawberries, apples, bananas, as well as fresh compotes and jellies made from fruits and berries.

Sweets

Zephyr and fruit jellies are allowed from sweets.

Drinks

Non-carbonated water, non-acidic juices, aqueous juice diluted with water are allowed.

Lean meat and fish, eggs

Chicken, beef, rabbit meat cooked, as well as fish, in the diet can be boiled chicken eggs or in the form of omelets, not more than 3 pieces per day.

Porridge

Porridge cooked in milk or water, rice, buckwheat, manna, oats.

It is forbidden!

  • Fried, smoked and marinated products, acidic foods and pickles, all products that increase acidity in gastric juice;
  • Bitter foods, mustard, various types of sauces, canned food, bitter concentrates;
  • Confectionery made from layered dough;
  • Solid species that contain large numbers of plant cells and have thick skin are prohibited from vegetables;
  • Dried fruits, especially raisins, figs and dates, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts and walnuts;
  • Ice cream and chocolate are forced during the aggravation period;
  • Carbonated drinks, borax and cool coffee, sour juices should be completely excluded from alcohol during the aggravation period;
  • Fatty meats, pork, lamb, poultry, ham, sausages, sausages, sausages and sardines are prohibited;
  • Legumes are prohibited: peas, beans and corn.

Medicinal products

Despite the large number of products allowed for peptic ulcer disease, there are some that have a healing effect, they strengthen the body and actively fight Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that in most cases causes erosions of the gastric and duodenal mucosa, and:

Milk

Milk has the ability to fill and exfoliate the stomach wall and thus no longer allow aggressive products and gastric juice to damage the wall.

Specialists always recommend that patients regularly consume low-fat milk, as it accelerates the healing process of the ulcer, however, after milk intake patients significantly reduce the pain caused by the ulcer and sometimes even disappear altogether.

honey

Honey is no less useful product than milk in peptic ulcer disease, a small amount of which is recommended to be taken daily.

Thanks to its micronutrients and vitamins, it has a positive effect on the entire digestive tract, quenches inflammatory processes, replenishes the stomach wall and neutralizes acidity in gastric juice, reduces its secretion and reduces pain.

Reduces the feeling of vomiting and heartburn characteristic of peptic ulcer disease, increases the level of hemoglobin in the blood and is the best prophylactic against anemia.

Cabbage juice

Only the juice and not the cabbage itself, which is freshly squeezed, has healing properties. It contains a fairly stable form of ascorbic acid and an anti-ulcer vitamin, which fights Helicobacter pylori and accelerates ulcer healing.

Keep in mind

The main rule that must be followed for a person with ulcers, in addition to treatment and medication – is a positive attitude and a strong belief in recovery.

Only a combination of these factors can provide a thorough and complete solution to the problem.
