What is vaginismus?
– Sexual disorders that are particularly common among women include a weakening or loss of sexual desire, difficulty feeling orgasm, and pain of a spasmodic nature during intercourse.
Vaginismus is a spasmodic and severely painful spasm of the muscles of the base of the vagina and pelvis that often makes sexual contact even impossible. It can be manifested by simple pain and create serious resistance to any movement of the body in the vagina (gynecological
Tasting, mirrors, tampons, sexual contact, etc.).
Involuntary muscle spasms sometimes start with the mere thought of having sex (or having a gynecological procedure).
The pain is transmitted to the inner surface of the thigh and is accompanied by convulsions. The sensation of pain manifests itself even in the case of a gentle, tactful turning of a man. In such a case, the woman avoids sexual contact, and if she agrees (also – only in mild forms of vaginismus), she does so at the cost of unwanted sensations.
According to the degree of abnormal reaction, several forms of vaginismus are distinguished:
Grade I – the reaction begins when a penis or gynecological instrument is inserted into the vagina;
Grade II – the reaction begins when the genitals are touched or expected to be touched;
Grade III – The reaction begins even in the case of sexual intercourse or gynecological examination.
Women with vaginismus can not control the spasm. Thus, this disease can be compared to the blink of an eye when something falls on our eyes.
– Who is most affected by this pathology?
– Vaginismus is found in 3-4% of women. He may appear at any age, but most still girls and young women complain, usually at the beginning of sex life. It is believed that vaginismus is often experienced by highly developed and emotionally prone women.
– What is the cause of vaginismus?
Vaginismus is often the result of dyspareunia (pain during intercourse). It may be the other way around. A combination of these pathologies is also common. Other causes include traumatic mental or genital trauma: some have vaginismus due to fear of first sexual contact, some – due to rape, gross defloration or other forms of violence, including gross gynecological examination, as well as – fear, stress. One of the reasons is mental disorder as well. Vaginismus developed at this time is known as pseudovaginismus.
– Do women consult a doctor at such times?
– Unfortunately, many do not even understand what is happening to him, many get used to the situation, and many find it awkward to talk about it. Most couples who want to have a child, but vaginismus does not allow them to conceive a child, consult a doctor. If a woman is still pregnant (accidental penetration of sperm into the vagina or more or less complete coitus during light vaginismus), the abnormalities characteristic of vaginismus disappear after childbirth.
– How is vaginismus treated?
– Treatment of vaginismus includes general health measures, psychotherapy, correction of misconceptions about the pain and danger of defloration, treatment of inflammatory diseases of the genitals. But treatment is effective only when the disorder has not yet been observed in consciousness or in its development plays a predominant role in embarrassment, insufficient sexual desire. Complex treatment with an individual approach includes the following:
Psychoanalysis, individual and behavior therapy, which resolves internal conflicts, addresses sexual impulses in the normal bed, relieves neurotic anxiety and waiting neurosis, increases a woman’s self-confidence. Hypnotherapy is also used, which in combination with other methods accelerates the achievement of a psychotherapeutic effect and normalizes sexual function.
Bilateral – both partners – sex therapy. Since the problem has affected both of them, both of them need treatment for sexual disharmony. At this time the couple discusses with the doctor the psychological and physiological aspects of sexual function, sexual disorders, possible principles of treatment, methods and more. The goal of such therapy is to restore normal sexual and spiritual connection. In addition, men are explained how important a sexual prelude is to a woman (more so than sexual intercourse and orgasm).
Specific exercises: The doctor explains to partners the nature of involuntary contractions of the vaginal muscles. The most effective method is for the woman to deliberately tense the muscles and then relax.
